A specially formulated rat block diet is actually best. However, not all rat foods are good. Mazuri is the only decent one sold in stores, but it's still not all that great. If you're able to order online, Harlan Teklad is one of the healthiest and most affordable rat foods. A high-quality block diet along with fresh fruits/veggies a few times a week is the best diet.

Also, that skin allergy MIGHT have been caused by too much protein in the diet rather than bedding. Not much you can do but make sure your rat is getting a good diet and the skin should heal on its own. Either way, Carefresh is good to use :)

What kind of home made rat food mix should I try?
In my ignorance I allowed my rats to become obese. I wasn't aware of the food factors that caused obesity but after research I feel like I have a tentative grasp of the situation. So it seems that a home made rat mix is best but I don't know which to try so I was wondering if anyone had success with a certain mix? There is no vet in my area that cares for small pets so I can't even consult a vet about it (very irritating) so I figured the next best thing would be experienced rat owners. I've also had a skin allergy with one of my rats due to the bedding ( and most likely diet according to the things I've read) and was wondering also what remedies for irritated skin I should try?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I now use care fresh for the bedding.

Thank you very much in advance,

Dantia
